WILDLIFE & ALTUN HA (Departs at 7 AM and Returns at 6 PM) Altun Ha is the most extensively excavated ruin in Belize and is located 31 miles north of Belize City. This site was a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period, as well as a vital trade center that linked the Caribbean shores with other Maya centers in the interior. The ruin consists of two main plazas with some thirteen temple and residential structures. The trip starts at the Banyan bay dock and you are picked up by boat and cruise to the mouth of the Belize River on the mainland. From there cruise 26 miles up the river to view monkeys, birds, crocks, iguanas and the “jabiru”, the world’s largest bird. Then you will taken by bus to ruins of Altun Ha where your knowledgeable guides will have you dreaming of a long lost Mayan civilization! This is a full day’s journey and truly an educational trip.
